A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
