No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
